We didn\u2019t hit this milestone by chasing viral hits, but by blending what works on the platform with what makes the Journal distinctive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main goal of our social media team is to bring people into The Wall Street Journal universe. And when we consider that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/09\/25\/1-in-5-americans-now-regularly-get-news-on-tiktok-up-sharply-from-2020\/\">1 in 5 adults are no<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/09\/25\/1-in-5-americans-now-regularly-get-news-on-tiktok-up-sharply-from-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">w<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/09\/25\/1-in-5-americans-now-regularly-get-news-on-tiktok-up-sharply-from-2020\/\"> getting their news on TikTok<\/a> according to a recent Pew Research survey, it\u2019s a platform of significant importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For current subscribers, these videos reinforce the value of their subscription. For non-subscribers, we\u2019re giving them a reason to build a relationship with us and, hopefully, a reason to subscribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By focusing on exclusivity, authenticity, and trust\u2014principles that matter more than ever amid today\u2019s ocean of AI-generated content\u2014we sharpened and refined our editorial output. As a result, our audiences responded with sustained attention and deeper engagement. This demonstrates our value by showing audiences something they can\u2019t get anywhere else. For example, we asked why Americans traveling abroad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@wallstreetjournal\/video\/7598669794094714167\">love visiting Costco<\/a>, and looked inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@wallstreetjournal\/video\/7247238068430753066?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Titan submersible<\/a> with an interactive graphic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By laying out a purpose from the outset, we were able to focus our storytelling and publish each piece with a clear \u2018why\u2019, telling the viewer what\u2019s in it for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-promote-individuals-not-just-the-brand\">Promote individuals, not just the brand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-promote-individuals-not-just-the-brandby-launching-the-talent-lab-a-new-team-in-our-newsroom-that-trains-and-upskills-journalists-in-audience-building-we-ve-been-able-to-expand-our-focus-on-the-reporters-themselves-on-social-media-audiences-want-to-know-the-people-behind-the-reporting-and-we-want-our-reporters-expertise-to-help-build-the-credibility-and-trust-that-people-crave\">By launching the Talent Lab, a new team in our newsroom that trains and upskills journalists in audience-building, we\u2019ve been able to expand our focus on the reporters themselves. On social media, audiences want to know the people behind the reporting, and we want our reporters\u2019 expertise to help build the credibility and trust that people crave.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-promote-individuals-not-just-the-brandby-launching-the-talent-lab-a-new-team-in-our-newsroom-that-trains-and-upskills-journalists-in-audience-building-we-ve-been-able-to-expand-our-focus-on-the-reporters-themselves-on-social-media-audiences-want-to-know-the-people-behind-the-reporting-and-we-want-our-reporters-expertise-to-help-build-the-credibility-and-trust-that-people-crave\">In the ultimate example, Ryan Knutson, co-host of our daily podcast <em>The Journal<\/em>, went to a party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@wallstreetjournal\/video\/7586151792044526861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for people named Ryan<\/a> and took behind-the-scenes footage for our team to tell the story from the inside. It was a great case of lowering the barrier between the host and the audience, allowing us to connect them in a way that might be more difficult for a straightforward article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"h-promote-individuals-not-just-the-brandby-launching-the-talent-lab-a-new-team-in-our-newsroom-that-trains-and-upskills-journalists-in-audience-building-we-ve-been-able-to-expand-our-focus-on-the-reporters-themselves-on-social-media-audiences-want-to-know-the-people-behind-the-reporting-and-we-want-our-reporters-expertise-to-help-build-the-credibility-and-trust-that-people-crave\">We\u2019ve seen similar success on LinkedIn. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7414652115513696256\/?originTrackingId=wvpVCEHYRiCo6YMAbDDDGw%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ben Cohen\u2019s video<\/a> about the Ford engineer who created the dashboard arrow to show which side your gas tank is on was a simple idea expertly executed.
